About the Band

Swing and Turn Stringband is a Bay Area string band with a high-energy drive and a joyous, inclusive spirit that pulls people in closer to the circle.

The band draws on old-time traditions, playing Round Peak-style tunes and songs from West Virginia and the Carter Family songbook. As a band, and in various combinations, the members have played house parties, dances, festivals, weddings, bars, and private events for over 15 years.

The band is made up of musicians steeped in a wide range of American folk traditions: Aaron Hammerman (Deep Basement Shakers, Mark Hummel) on banjo, Max Lopez (Mark St. Mary, Cedric Watson) on acoustic bass and vocals, Michael Small (The Town Howlers) on fiddle and vocals, Todd Tholke (Clementine String Band) on guitar and vocals, and Tonya Newstetter (B*Craft) on guitar and vocals. Deeply embedded in multiple Bay Area music communities, from bluegrass to zydeco, they bring a range that shapes their hard-driving, dance-ready sound.
